Beware the Creeper!

Iain's life as a psychotic crimefighter

Watched two episodes of Mataku last night with murasaki_1966 - The Sisters and Heirloom.

An interesting Twilight Zone-ish series based around Maori legends and mythology (though set, so far, in the present day.) Each episode is followed by a short interview segment with the writers who give more insight into the legends they've used and the issues they hoped to raise with the story.

My favourite story was the first one The Sisters - in the prologue the youngest of two sisters is seemingly taken by the Maori fairies (who are very similar, in many respects, to the British faerie.) The eldest sister grows up to lead a terrible life, prostituting herself to her landlord and working cleaning jobs to make ends meet, and then her sister shows up, haven't not aged a day...

This was very creepy, with an unexpected but deeply satisfying ending. Both episodes so far have not had twists so much as nice, solid endings. I'm glad Rob Hood put me on to this series. It's available as a DVD collection and well worth picking up if you're a fan of horror/supernatural anthology series. There's also a view of New Zealand that we don't often get (even though the pakehas' tend to be unsympathetic if not downright villainous compare to the Maori.)
