Spider-Man 3

almost destroyed the good will created by the first two with one of the most astonishingly mis-judged scenes I've seen in a big budget film.

Too many villains, too little plot and stuff that just disappears after being oh so important at the start of the film.

Probably should have been two films.

Thomas Haden Church, however, is great as Sandman, in fact the villains have far more interesting motivations than the hero this time around. Spiderman was just a dick.

And I could quite happily go through life without ever hearing Kirsten Dunst sing again.

Just wait until you see Pirates 3.

This was the thinking - We have a fairly serviceable homage to action films of old which is lifted out of ordinariness by a quirky and sustained performance by Johnny Depp. Therefore, in the second film lets add more characters and more subplots that give us less time with that character. And in the third film lets keep this character off-screen for as much time as we can while we add even more characters and subplots.

I predict that Pirates 4 will contain the son of Orlando Bloom, the uncle of Orlando Bloom the cousin of Keira Knightley, the return of the real pirate king (because they said there isn't one in 3), some more minor characters who we're now supposed to care about, some more major characters who we're now supposed to care about, action scenes where no punch ever connects and no shot lasts more than a second, Johnny Depp turning up only in the extra scene at the end of the credits.

But, yes, Spider-Man 3 = awful = made squillions of dollars = success = perfect formula for future films

shit, we're going to see this next week.

Like the masochists we are.

At least Len Wein has a good word for Pirates 3

Don't do it!

(No that I've seen it. And Bianca really liked it.)

We may see Zodiac on Friday.

I'd rather see Zodiac, but I think we've got to let Pirates 3 kill our taste for the franchise once and for all (like a vaccination.)

PotC 2 did that for us.

Yeah, you would have thought we'd learnt...

Could be an interesting film.

I've seen both Pirates III and Zodiac. I'm confidant that you'll enjoy Zodiac far more.

Maybe I should just buy Captain Blood (newly out on DVD).

Hey! Am I standing in your way?

No. But it's your payday tomorrow, and you're closer to the shops.

Thomas Haden Church, however, is great as Sandman, in fact the villains have far more interesting motivations than the hero this time around.

And, you know, that would have been great if Sandman's story intersected with Spidey's in any meaningful way. He was mostly just there for the fight scenes.

I think I have to agree with everything you just said about Spiderman III.

I liked Spider-Man 3 for the big screen special effects. Otherwise, the love storyline is boring now.
Tobey was good in the brief scenes he did as dark spidey. Kirsten couldn't sing, but her dress was nice.
Didn't like POTC 2, so not seeing POTC3.
