Farewell Facebook

I'm deleting my Facebook account on Sunday night (just sent a message to people on FB giving my other online hangouts including this one - so I'm giving them a chance to respond before I shut it down.)

The New York Times gives a pretty good reason why

I belong to a few social networks and while Facebook is the most populous it is also the most dangerous and demonstrates the most contempt for its users.

(UPDATE) - Here's a fairly indepth (and idiosyncratic) commentary on the issues with Facebook from the notorious Jason Calacanis

And from that piece - here's The Top 10 Reasons You Should Quit Facebook

If you put some message up on facebook to say you're deleting your account, I couldn't spot it. I suspect facebook deleted it in retaliation.

Because of the limitations on sending messages in FB - I didn't send a message to anyone I'm in regular contact with - or who reads my lj. Just the people who I want to stay in touch with who have only contacted me through FB.

I'm staying off it until Sunday night (when I delete my account. Of course, I'm going to live tweet it.)

You should put a wall message up. Then everyone in the world will be able to see it...

Yay! Death to facebook!

I've been saying for a couple of years now that facebook is a gigantic accident waiting to happen.

Aren't you signed up to every social networking outlet in existence?

And now you're forcing the people who only communicate to you via Facebook to sign up for some other social networking experience if they want to stay in touch?

Well, from now on I'm only going to communicate with you if you're on Facebook. (Well, after this message, that is)

The ball is back in your social networking court my friend.

Only Orkut.

(sooo lonelyyyyy)

Yay - my plan is working!

Yeah, I think you're on the money.

!
but where will i see photos from wazza's 50th?

I have to be on it cos work says we all have to have FB accts as part of "social media".

my privacy has already gone out the window since journos all have to have a public profile and branding. it's stressful, and I preferred it otherwise, but that's why i have another public blog now, and opened my FB up to everyone.

Our work won't let us withing sniffing distance.

but where will i see photos from wazza's 50th?
